China’s Shanghai hit a record $80.3 billion in tourism revenue in 2024, with plans to become a global travel leader through innovative expansions and growth.

Shanghai, the bustling metropolis in East China, recorded an unprecedented tourism revenue of 576.1 billion yuan ($80.3 billion) in 2024, according to the latest reports from local authorities.

Of this total, domestic tourism generated approximately 497.3 billion yuan, while inbound tourism revenue reached nearly $11.1 billion—both setting new records, as revealed by the municipal culture and tourism bureau.

In 2024, the city welcomed 390 million domestic tourists and over 6.7 million international visitors.

Shanghai has recently unveiled a comprehensive three-year plan aimed at fostering high-quality growth in its tourism sector, with the goal of becoming a globally recognized tourism hub.

Building on the success of Shanghai Disney Resort, the city is preparing for the summer launch of LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort. Additionally, US entertainment giant Warner Bros. plans to open a Making of Harry Potter studio tour in Shanghai by 2027.

With a focus on expanding its cruise tourism offerings, Shanghai is positioning itself as China’s premier cruise destination by developing a range of diverse travel experiences.
