Alaska Airlines
Autism Society

Alaska Airlines partners with the Autism Society for a groundbreaking practice flight, setting a new standard in travel inclusivity for individuals with disabilities.

Alaska Airlines recently joined forces with the Autism Society and port authorities to offer a disability practice flight at Portland International Airport. This initiative provided individuals with disabilities the opportunity to familiarize themselves with various aspects of air travel, from navigating the airport and going through security to experiencing a simulated flight. Programs like these are instrumental in alleviating travel-related stress and ensuring that customers, particularly those with cognitive and developmental disabilities, receive more inclusive and thoughtful service.

In collaboration with the Autism Society and port authorities, Alaska’s Disability Office organized this practice flight to give individuals with disabilities (IWDs) a chance to rehearse critical parts of the travel process. From airport entry and security screening to taxiing on the tarmac, participants were able to experience a flight scenario before their actual travels.

Such programs are designed to reduce the anxiety that many individuals with disabilities feel during travel and empower Alaska Airlines staff to provide inclusive services, products, and support to all passengers, including those with cognitive and developmental challenges.

Alaska Airlines Disability Office

In December 2022, Alaska Airlines launched its Disability Office, a dedicated hub for addressing disability-related matters and fostering inclusion throughout the company. The office acts as a consistent resource for internal teams and plays a pivotal role in advancing disability inclusion initiatives.

Since its inception, the Disability Office has achieved significant milestones:

  • Handled over 150 inquiries and requests related to disabilities
  • Delivered 10 disability-focused workshops on topics ranging from neurodiversity to autism in the workplace
  • Fulfilled more than 200 requests for American Sign Language services
  • Assisted with accessibility needs for over 50 events and social gatherings
  • Presented on disability inclusion at seven national conferences

Impacting Guests and Employees

The Disability Office is the first of its kind in the airline industry, focused on collaborating with various internal teams to enhance the experience of both guests and employees. Its contributions include:

  • Establishing Accessible Event Guidelines and an Accommodations Statement for events
  • Creating comprehensive handbooks for Accessible Employment and Facilities
  • Responding to more than 200 American Sign Language requests
  • Supporting over 50 events and social activities with accessibility requirements
  • Advocating for accessibility and inclusion at national conferences

Advancements in Travel for Wheelchair Users and Upcoming Practice Flights

Alaska Airlines is also enhancing the travel experience for wheelchair users by testing autonomous electric wheelchairs at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in its D and C concourses. In addition, the airline is collaborating with its Innovation team to explore cutting-edge technology aimed at improving inclusive travel and finding solutions for mobility device damage that can occur during flights.

Later this year, Alaska will partner with San Jose Mineta International Airport and The Arc, an organization focused on advocating for the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, to host another disability practice flight, further strengthening its commitment to inclusivity in air travel.
