The historic Mamleshwar Temple in Omkareshwar is expected to undergo renovation as part of efforts by the tourism and archaeology departments, with plans to build new ghats to accommodate an anticipated surge in visitors during Simhastha 2028.
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC), in collaboration with the district administration and the archaeological department, is preparing a detailed project proposal aimed at upgrading infrastructure around the main temple and Malleshwar area in Omkareshwar to provide better amenities and manage increased tourist footfall.
The proposed development will include the construction of new ghats, enhanced waiting areas within the temple complex, integration of old and new ghats to handle large crowds, public holding zones, and improved parking facilities to ensure a seamless experience for devotees and tourists.
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire an architect for detailed planning of various site upgrades in Omkareshwar.
In preparation for Simhastha, the tourism department plans to expand its hotel facilities in Omkareshwar by adding 60 new rooms and upgrading the sound and light show to enhance visitor experiences.
MPTDC is also developing several new amenities in Omkareshwar, including a ‘Shikhar Darshan Point,’ a ‘Parikrama Path,’ a tourist facilitation center, an information hub, restrooms, and drinking water stations, among other facilities, to cater to the growing number of visitors.
Tourist numbers in Omkareshwar have seen significant growth in recent years. Out of the 11.21 crore tourist visits recorded in Madhya Pradesh last year, Ujjain saw the highest influx with 5.28 crore visitors, followed by Indore with 1.01 crore and Omkareshwar with 34.7 lakh.
