Tensions have largely escalated between Trump’s administration and local leaders. Crime Prevention Research Center founder John Lott said, “I think they’re the same type of argument. Maybe it’s a matter of degree in terms of the difference. But the notion is: Will higher arrest rates, higher conviction rates, longer prison sentences, will that make it riskier for criminals to commit crime and deter crime?”

Lott added, “You have people like Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, saying that prison doesn’t work, that that doesn’t deter crime. He just calls it racist to go and put people in jail for committing crimes.” . . .

Armed citizens save lives. Data from the Crime Prevention Research Center shows that armed citizens prevent or end more mass shooting events than the police.

Although many were skeptical about the deployment, this decision has already paid off in helping to reduce crime.

John Lott, founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, recently discoveredthat there was a 13-day streak without a single homicide in the city from August 13 to August 26, according to Fox News.

Further evaluation of these statistics found that there was just a 0.37% probability of this 13-day streak occurring on its own, indicating that the National Guard troops have already made a significant difference in the area. . . .

Fox News (Right bias) said that Trump’s crackdown benefited black Americans, who are the most common victims of homicide in the area. It cited the Crime Prevention Research Center, which concluded, based on the last seven months of crime statistics, the probability of a homicide-free streak without Trump’s crackdown was 0.37%. The research noted that looking at February and March artificially lowers the data because homicides tend to peak in the summer months, making this streak more significant. . . .

President Donald Trump’s federalization of the D.C. police department and crackdown on Washington crime overwhelmingly benefited Black Americans, who are common victims of violent crimes, crime data found.

“You go 13 days without a homicide occurring, those homicides would have invariably been very heavily Black,” John Lott, founder and president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, told Fox News Digital in a Wednesday phone interview. “And so those lives, you have Blacks who didn’t die, who otherwise would have died.”

Lott published data in August focusing on Washington, D.C.’s 13-day run of zero.

On May 27, 2017, Breitbart News pointed to data John Lott drew from concealed carry permit revocations and quoted him: “Permits have been revoked for firearms-related violations at rates of thousandths of one percentage point. Civilian permit holders are less likely than police officers to be convicted of a firearms violation.”

Homicide Demographics (2019-2021):

— Black victims: 96% of all homicides

— Other demographics: 4% of all homicides

These statistics highlight that violent crime reduction disproportionately benefits Black residents in the district.

Crime researcher John Lott from the Crime Prevention Research Center analyzed the 13-day period using DC’s 2025 homicide data. His statistical analysis suggests the probability of such a streak occurring without intervention was less than half a percent

The timing stung especially hard. Kirk had long been a thorn in the side of progressive policies, rallying crowds against what he termed “radical gun grabs.” Just months earlier, he’d testified before a House subcommittee, arguing that armed self-defense—legal in Utah, where the shooting occurred—deters threats more than it invites them. Data from the Crime Prevention Research Center backs this up: states with permissive carry laws see lower rates of violent crime against public figures. . .
