Indonesia is gearing up to introduce a new airline in 2025, sparking interest across Southeast Asia as regional neighbors like Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand closely observe its development. This move comes in response to the increasing demand for international air travel, signaling a significant expansion in Indonesia’s aviation landscape. The airline aims to enhance connectivity and cater to the growing number of travelers seeking international destinations, positioning Indonesia as a key player in the global aviation market.
Indonesia is set to see the introduction of a new airline as it prepares to meet the surging demand for international air travel. This initiative aligns with predictions that international flight capacity from the country will increase by over 6% in the upcoming 2025 summer season.
A Singapore-based investment firm with diverse interests including renewable energy and agriculture has established PT Indonesia Airlines Group. This new venture will operate out of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta and focus on providing premium services exclusively on international routes. The airline, named Indonesia Airlines, plans to connect to 48 destinations in 30 countries within its first five years.
The development phase involves extensive business planning and feasibility studies, with an ambition to assemble a fleet of 20 aircraft. The prospective fleet could include a mix of 10 Airbus A321neo or A321LR and 10 widebody A350-900s or Boeing 787-9s.
This expansion comes at a time when international flight capacity from Indonesia is witnessing significant growth, with nearly 14.8 million departure seats expected during the northern summer of 2025. This represents a 10.7% increase year-on-year and a 6.3% rise from 2019 figures.
Indonesia’s recovery in international air travel is robust, ranking second in Southeast Asia, only trailing Vietnam. While Indonesia’s capacity shows a marked improvement, nearby regions like Singapore and Malaysia are experiencing more modest increases, and the Philippines and Thailand are still not back to pre-pandemic levels.
For the summer 2025 season, 60 airlines are scheduled to operate international flights to and from Indonesia. Leading this capacity are AirAsia Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, and AirAsia, showcasing a diverse and competitive market landscape.
