A new Democrat group named Welcome has come out with a report on whether the party’s shift to the left has helped the party — there answer is “no.” For example, the share of Democrat members of congress who cosponsored an assault weapon ban went from 41% during the 2013-14 congress to 88% during the 2023-24 congress.

Comparing the 2012 and 2024 Democrat Party platforms shows that gun control had the third largest increase in the frequency that the term was mentioned, behind only “white/black/Latino/Latina” and “Climate” and ahead of “LGBT/LGBTQI+.”

Gun control is clearly an issue for college educated voters versus non-college educated voters.

Finally, House Democrats who opposed an assault weapon ban tended to do 1.8 percentage points better in their vote share relative to what they were expected to do. It was the third worse issue for the Democrats.
