The 2025-26 cruise season at Townsville Port in Queensland, Australia has officially kicked off with the arrival of the luxury cruise ship Regatta, bringing over 1,200 passengers and 380 crew to the coastal city. This marks the start of what is expected to be the busiest cruise season in the port’s history, with a record 26 cruise ships scheduled to dock throughout the season, including seven large-class vessels and two overnight stays.
Townsville has long been a popular stop for cruise passengers, thanks to its laid-back atmosphere, stunning tropical scenery, and access to iconic landmarks like the Great Barrier Reef and Magnetic Island. But this season brings something even more special—upgraded facilities at the port and the opportunity for larger vessels to dock in the city, thanks to a $251 million channel upgrade project completed earlier this year.
The port is now able to accommodate cruise ships that are longer than 238 meters, opening the door for vessels capable of carrying up to 3,000 passengers—three times the number the port has previously welcomed from a single ship.
According to Port of Townsville CEO, Ranee Crosby, the upgrade has been a game-changer for the city’s tourism industry: “With the practical completion of our $251 million channel upgrade project earlier this year, cruise ships longer than 238 meters can now safely access our port,” she said. “Some of these large-class cruise ships can carry up to 3,000 guests, which is triple the number of guests we’ve previously welcomed from a single ship.”
Record Passenger Numbers and Significant Economic Impact
This year, Townsville expects to host more than 31,000 passengers and 14,000 crew members, contributing significantly to the local economy. With the increased cruise traffic, Townsville’s tourism sector is poised for a major boost, as visitors explore the city’s attractions, enjoy local tours, and spend time in the region’s vibrant dining and shopping districts.
As Queensland’s Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Minister, Ros Bates, pointed out, the improvements to the port ensure that Townsville remains a key gateway to the Asia-Pacific region. “The completion of the channel upgrade project secures Townsville’s position as a gateway to Asia-Pacific and ensures the port is well positioned to meet growing demand into the future, whether that’s in trade or tourism,” she said.
The increase in cruise ships is set to enhance the city’s international profile, as tourists flock to see what this vibrant tropical destination has to offer. With overnight stays becoming a growing trend for cruise lines, Townsville is positioned as an ideal base for exploring both the city and its surrounding areas, providing travelers with even more time to discover the local culture, wildlife, and scenic beauty.
Special Events: The World’s Maiden Visit and Other Milestones
One of the most exciting developments for Townsville’s cruise season is the maiden visit of The World—a luxury residential cruise ship that will dock in the city in December 2025. This marks a milestone for the port, as The World is known for its exclusivity and lavish offerings, making it a highly anticipated event for both local authorities and tourists.
In addition to the arrival of The World, other major ships are expected to make overnight stays in Townsville, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to fully immerse themselves in the city’s offerings. Overnight stays enable passengers to explore Magnetic Island, the Reef, and enjoy more of what Townsville has to offer in terms of food, culture, and adventure without the rush of a single day trip.
The ability to host overnight stays also speaks to Townsville’s growing appeal as a destination for travelers who prefer a more relaxed pace, enjoying an evening in the city and experiencing its nightlife, local markets, and entertainment venues.
Port Upgrades and Economic Growth
To accommodate this influx of visitors and larger vessels, Townsville Port has made several significant upgrades. In addition to the $251 million channel upgrade, the port has invested $5.9 million in modernizing its cruise terminals to ensure that both passengers and crew experience smooth, efficient service upon arrival and departure. These improvements will also help boost local jobs and expand the tourism infrastructure that supports the growing number of visitors.
Crosby also highlighted that the port’s efforts to cater to larger ships and more passengers would support local businesses, from restaurants and hotels to tour operators and tourist attractions. “With our warm tropical spirit and genuine hospitality, Townsville is leaving a lasting impression,” Crosby added, noting the importance of offering visitors a friendly, welcoming atmosphere throughout their stay.
What This Means for Travelers
For travelers, Townsville’s 2025-26 cruise season offers more opportunities to explore Australia’s natural wonders and vibrant cities. Whether you are cruising on a large-class vessel or visiting on an overnight stop, the chance to experience the Great Barrier Reef, Magnetic Island, and the city’s historic sites is a major draw.
With the port now able to accommodate some of the largest cruise ships in the world, more travelers will be able to visit this tropical gem. Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Townsville’s growing role as a cruise hub ensures that visitors will find plenty to explore during their stop.
