The Emirates Group recently showcased its commitment to sustainability and the United Nations’ call to end plastic pollution at its annual event, Tomorrow Takes Flight. This year’s exhibition focused on addressing global plastic waste concerns, aligning with the UN’s mission to reduce single-use plastics and foster responsible consumption. The event served as a platform to highlight Emirates’ and dnata’s efforts to create a more sustainable future, emphasizing the principles of sourcing, reusing, repurposing, and reducing materials.
Held annually, Tomorrow Takes Flight stands as a testament to the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship, bringing together employees, industry partners, and sustainability advocates to share knowledge and initiatives that drive impact across the organization. This year, the exhibition presented innovative projects from Emirates and dnata, each tackling different aspects of sustainability, from engineering to service delivery, catering to cargo, and more.
Speaking at the opening of ‘Tomorrow Takes Flight’, Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Deputy President & Chief Operations Officer said: “Today’s event celebrates our sustainability journey while educating and inspiring our people through the showcased initiatives and meaningful discussions on sustainable practices. Environmental responsibility is essential to achieving our objectives as an airline and as an industry, and it supports the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy.
With governments and communities demanding meaningful action, collective responsibility across the entire ecosystem is vital. Emirates is making progress with emissions reduction projects across our operations, and we’re actively pursuing programmes that conserve resources through recycling and responsible sourcing. Collaboration with industry partners will be crucial in the years ahead to enhance the recyclability of materials across the supply chain.
We’re also encouraging our teams to build on the success of existing initiatives and push boundaries to develop new approaches that address the full spectrum of operational waste, and today is a great example of these drives. From cabin materials and catering to ground operations and maintenance, every touchpoint presents an opportunity to minimise environmental impact.”

Key Sustainability Initiatives at Emirates Group
A significant highlight at the event was the continuation of Aircrafted by Emirates, a project transforming retired aircraft parts into useful and aesthetically pleasing products. This initiative focuses on recycling metal and composite materials, turning them into functional items while significantly reducing waste. The airline’s commitment to responsible consumption was also demonstrated through the presentation of onboard products made from alternative or recycled materials.
One of the most engaging elements at the event was Emirates’ showcase of its plastic cleanup efforts at the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, emphasizing the company’s commitment to preserving natural environments. Additionally, a biodigester interactive display from Emirates Flight Catering demonstrated innovative solutions in waste management, while attendees sampled sustainable food options from MMI, Emirates Leisure Retail, dnata Catering & Retail, and Emirates Flight Catering.
dnata’s Global Sustainability Initiatives
dnata, the ground services and travel company, showcased its wide-ranging sustainability efforts, reflecting the company’s global reach and commitment to reducing environmental impact. The catering team emphasized its use of plant-based packaging and efforts to minimize waste by optimizing every ingredient used in its kitchens. In addition, dnata Cargo demonstrated its robust recycling programs, reinforcing its commitment to reducing waste and promoting a circular economy.
Dnata Travel made a significant contribution to the environment with its initiative in Sri Lanka, where it implemented a river interceptor designed to block ocean pollution before it reaches the sea. Other initiatives included the distribution of reusable items to employees, further promoting sustainable practices within the company.
Collaborating for a Greener Future
The event also featured several influential partners, including the University of Cambridge, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Airbus, Boeing, ENOC, and many others. These industry leaders shared insights into advancing sustainable aviation practices, from innovative engineering solutions to the reduction of carbon footprints in aviation operations.
Various partners also showcased their sustainability-driven initiatives. For example, Ecyclex and Reloop illustrated effective recycling methods for diverse waste streams, including e-waste, through a collaboration with Emirates Group IT. Falcon Aircraft Recycling highlighted innovative products crafted from repurposed aircraft components. Meanwhile, Dubai Can shared updates on the Dubai Reef project, which is poised to become the world’s largest purpose-built reef development.
Dubai Airports also made an impact, showcasing how the airport community is addressing waste reduction through innovative technologies and cross-sector collaborations. Their efforts are pivotal in ensuring sustainable airport operations and reducing the environmental impact of air travel.
Engaging the Workforce in Sustainability
In addition to the impressive displays and partnerships, employees were invited to actively participate in sustainability initiatives during the event. Quizzes, booth challenges, and interactive activities added an engaging element to the event, allowing employees to deepen their understanding of sustainability efforts while winning eco-friendly prizes.
A unique aspect of the event was the creation of a ‘Bottle Wall,’ where employees contributed plastic bottles that were collected and upcycled into custom plant pots. These pots were then distributed to staff members, further reinforcing the importance of reducing waste and promoting a circular economy within the company.
