Record-breaking tourist visits in Assam boost river tourism; new ‘hop on hop off’ boat service planned.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, tourist visits peaked at 9,831,141, setting a new record, with the following year seeing 7,067,335 tourists explore the state.

During 2021-22, tourist numbers reached 1,702,932, and by the end of December in 2024-25, the count escalated to 5,762,772.

To enhance river tourism, the ‘Jalporee’ luxury cruise was launched on the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati during 1991-92, and the ‘Mahabahu’ service began navigating from Guwahati to Majuli in 2011-12.

Additionally, there are plans to introduce a ‘hop on hop off’ boat service that will link eight significant religious sites along the Brahmaputra in and around Guwahati.

A new organization has been established for this initiative, formed through a collaboration between the Sagarmala Development Co. Ltd, Inland Waterways Authority of India Ltd, Assam’s state Tourism Department, and Inland Water Transport Department.
