Indonesia‘s West Java province has been hit by devastating flash floods and landslides, leaving a trail of destruction in Sukabumi regency. The natural disasters, which began on Tuesday, have displaced thousands of residents, destroyed hundreds of homes, and caused significant damage to infrastructure. With five confirmed fatalities and seven individuals still missing, the tragedy has prompted large-scale rescue operations and relief efforts.
The Scale of the Disaster
According to Hadi Rahmat, spokesperson for the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency, the disaster has caused extensive damage in Sukabumi regency. A total of 589 houses have been damaged, forcing 1,400 residents to evacuate. Infrastructure has also suffered significant blows, with 10 bridges collapsing and further isolating affected areas.
“These disasters have severely disrupted residents’ movements and daily lives,” Rahmat said. He added that two evacuation centers have been established to provide shelter, food, medicines, and other essential supplies to evacuees. However, many survivors have opted to stay with relatives, emphasizing the localized impact of the calamity.
Search and Rescue Operations
Rescue teams are racing against time to locate the seven individuals reported missing. Among these, five are believed to have been victims of landslides, while the circumstances surrounding the other two disappearances remain unclear. Rahmat noted that search operations are being conducted in landslide-affected zones and surrounding areas.
The confirmed death toll currently stands at five, with victims’ bodies recovered from various sites. The disaster’s rapidly evolving nature has complicated rescue efforts, but local authorities are determined to locate all missing persons.

The destruction of 10 bridges has significantly hampered the movement of residents and relief supplies. With roads rendered impassable and villages cut off, the situation underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure in disaster-prone regions like Sukabumi.
