A new 120 km river cruise along the Narmada River, connecting Gujarat’s Statue of Unity with Madhya Pradesh’s Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, is set to enhance tourism and regional connectivity. The cruise promises travelers a unique experience, showcasing the natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and spiritual significance of both states. This initiative is part of a broader plan to develop National Waterway-73 and promote inland water transport, with initial funding of Rs 1.16 crore allocated, and an additional Rs 61 crore earmarked for infrastructure development, including floating jetties along key river points.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam, and Madhya Pradesh Tourism, aimed at boosting both tourism and regional accessibility. Floating jetties will be installed in strategic locations, with Madhya Pradesh already securing one from Kolkata, while Gujarat is working on its own infrastructure. This will ensure easy access for tourists and facilitate smoother travel between key locations, such as Maheshwar, Mandleshwar, and Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, and Chhota Udepur and Kevadia in Gujarat.

One of the major highlights of the river cruise is the opportunity to experience iconic landmarks from a fresh perspective. As passengers glide along the Narmada, they will pass by the colossal Statue of Unity, offering stunning views of this landmark. The journey will also take visitors to Omkareshwar, one of India’s 12 sacred Jyotirlingas, making the cruise not just a means of transport but a spiritual and cultural exploration. This route allows travelers to connect with India’s rich heritage while enjoying scenic beauty in a sustainable way.

Sustainability is at the heart of the Narmada River cruise project. As one of the most eco-friendly modes of transport, river cruising offers a greener alternative to traditional travel options, helping reduce the carbon footprint of tourism. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of promoting sustainable tourism while offering visitors an immersive experience in nature. The Narmada River cruise is set to become a benchmark for eco-conscious travel, offering both environmental and cultural value.

As river tourism gains traction across India, with services already operational along the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers, the Narmada River cruise adds to the country’s growing appeal as a river tourism destination. This project is expected to pave the way for further development of inland waterways, providing travelers with an enriching and eco-friendly way to explore India’s landscapes. The Narmada River cruise offers a unique, scenic, and sustainable way to experience the beauty and spirituality of two of India’s most iconic regions.
