ANA, Kikuchi Sheet Industries, Ltd. (Kikuchi Sheet), and TOPPAN Corporation (TOPPAN), a subsidiary of TOPPAN Holdings, have collaborated to create a fire-resistant electronics storage bag. This innovative product is designed to mitigate the risk of fires caused by overheating batteries in electronic devices, ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft.
These fire-resistant storage bags are already in use across ANA’s fleet, including AirJapan and ANA Wings aircraft. In a further commitment to promoting fire safety, ANA plans to make the bags available for purchase by other airlines and commercial clients via ANA Trading from January 2025.
The concept for the storage bags originated from suggestions by ANA cabin crew, who highlighted the need for safer storage options following several incidents involving lithium-ion batteries on other airlines. In response to this feedback, the fire-resistant bag was conceptualized and developed.
The product stands out for its integration of cutting-edge technologies: TOPPAN’s “FSfilm®,” which releases a fire-extinguishing aerosol when exposed to heat, and Kikuchi’s specialized fire-resistant bag. This combination ensures rapid and secure containment of devices that exhibit overheating or structural abnormalities. The bag is both lightweight and compact, making it suitable for installation on all ANA and AirJapan aircraft.
ANA’s involvement in the development and deployment of this storage bag underscores the airline’s unwavering dedication to safety. Together with Kikuchi Sheet and TOPPAN, ANA Group is set to expand sales of the product and continue advancing safety initiatives through innovative technologies.
FSfilm® (Fire Propagation Suppressing Film):
TOPPAN’s FSfilm® is a high-performance fire-extinguishing material that emits an effective aerosol to suppress flames. Utilizing TOPPAN’s proprietary coating technology and GL BARRIER transparent vapor-deposited barrier film, FSfilm® offers excellent initial fire suppression and long-term reliability.
Fire-Resistant Bag:
The fire-resistant bag incorporates a JIS A 1323 Class A approved felt sheet combined with an imported aluminum-coated heat-resistant material, certified as fire-retardant. This design makes it ideal for storing and transporting devices at risk of emitting smoke or catching fire.
