A Jetstar flight headed to Phuket, Thailand made an emergency landing on Wednesday after a damaged wheel during takeoff created a tense situation for everyone onboard.
Safe Landing After Nerve-Wracking Hours
Flight JQ27, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, touched down safely at Sydney Airport just before 5 pm after circling for nearly two hours to burn and dump fuel. Jetstar assured passengers and onlookers that the landing went smoothly, with no injuries reported. Emergency crews stood by, ready to act, but thankfully, they weren’t needed.
Passengers Cheer in Relief
Passengers couldn’t hide their relief. After the landing everyone clapped and cheered after the safe landing. From the runway, footage showed the plane being carefully towed back to the gate.
Travel Plans Thrown Off Course
For the 320 passengers onboard, it was a long day. They spent the night in Sydney hotels while waiting for their rescheduled departure at 11:15 am on Thursday.
Airport Delays Ripple Out
The emergency caused delays across Sydney Airport, with flights running up to 70 minutes late. The main runway was briefly closed for about 30 minutes as the plane landed, got towed, and the runway underwent inspections. Three flights—one domestic and two international—had to be diverted.

Jetstar engineers are now investigating what caused the wheel damage during takeoff. For passengers and airline staff, it’s a moment of relief but also a reminder of how quickly plans can change.
