The LENOX, a historic landmark located in Cape Town’s Gardens area, is poised for a significant transformation into an artist residency and boutique hotel. This redevelopment marks the beginning of a new chapter for the LENOX, aiming to become one of the first artist residencies in Cape Town established for both artists and the public by France.

Under the stewardship of Newmark Hotels & Reserves, the boutique hotel is envisioned not only as a place for guests to stay but also as a platform for engaging with artists from across continents during their residencies. The LENOX, with a history dating back to 1897 as a hotel, is undergoing a meticulous restoration by MEMORIST. This transformation is intended to result in a luxurious, 47-room boutique property.

Scheduled to welcome guests in 2026, the establishment will feature a range of amenities, including a restaurant, conference facilities, and a tranquil garden, all with a focus on the arts. An entire floor will be dedicated to resident artists, transforming it into a permanent art residence designed to host talent from South Africa, the African continent, and France, accommodating up to nine artists annually.

The location of The LENOX enhances its appeal, situated within Cape Town’s cultural hub, a stone’s throw away from the Iziko South African National Gallery, among other prestigious galleries and studios.

Neil Markovitz, CEO of Newmark Hotels & Reserves, expressed enthusiasm about reviving this significant structure, highlighting the company’s expertise in restoring historic buildings. The project aims to restore the grandeur of this iconic landmark located in a central part of Cape Town.

For global travelers with a penchant for the arts, the transformation of The LENOX into an artist residency and boutique hotel presents a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant cultural and artistic scene of Cape Town, offering a blend of luxury accommodation and artistic engagement.
